The airport was constructed in December of 2008 with a budget of nearly 4 billion yuan. It was opened to the public in May 2013, replacing Luogang Airport as the primary airport to serve Hefei as well as its nearby cities of Baohe Qu, Baoyongsi and Caocitang.
