It is a Finnish Evangelical Lutheran cathedral belonging to the Diocese of Helsinki. It was built from 1830 to 1852 to pay tribute to Tsar Nicholas I of Russia, the Grand Duke of Finland at the time. It was formerly called the St. Nicholas’ Church until 1917 during the Independence of Finland.
